Week of August 22-26, 2016

WELCOME BACK!

This is the beginning of another fantastic year here at Ac2E Middle! As a 7th grade student you will be asked to showcase responsibility and be proactive in all your courses. I am here to motivate and encourage you to be the best version of yourself. I hope that you will be open to learning this year and if you don't like math it is my goal to change your mind.

Remember to always show up every single day with a positive mindset and a willingness to absorb knowledge. Prepare yourselves for an amazing adventure through 7th grade, cherish every moment because the year will fly by quickly.
7th Grade Mathematics

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year. In this Mathematics course, you will be challenged, held to high expectations, and asked to use higher order thinking skills daily. The approach of this course is non-traditional. Daily application of Mathematics outside of the typical paper/pencil regimen will be required. You will work in groups often and be required to create, invent and aspire for more, just like the great Mathematicians that I know you have the potential to become.
My goal for you is that you not only learn mathematical concepts, but are able to apply them to real world experiences. I hope that as you leave my classroom each day, you are excited and confident about what you have learned and are eager to return. Orderly chaos is part of my classroom structure, therefore I understand that noise and movement are essential, but the need for rules and guidelines to be followed is of the utmost importance.

Assignments
Assignments are announced and posted as soon as possible. Assignments that are not completed during a class period will be required at the beginning of the next class period. Extension for any assignment will be granted only at the teacher’s discretion. I am available to help with anything that you do not understand. I’d rather receive something late, and have it be your best effort, than have it on time because you cheated.
However, time management is an essential part of life. Remember, the early bird gets the worm!
Make-Up Work
It is very important that you be present in class every day. Each day builds on the previous day’s lessons and excessive absences can be detrimental. It is your responsibility to go to the missing work folder and pick up any assignment that you missed.
What to do if
You missed a lecture: Come in for tutoring during lunch
You missed a test: Be ready to sit in another classroom to take the test during class the day you return.
You missed the day BEFORE a test: Be ready to take the schedule test during class with everyone else. I don’t usually teach new material the day before the test day.
Tardiness
Be in (as opposed to near) your assigned seat when the bell rings and remain there until the teacher dismisses the class. In the event that another teacher or staff member detains you, a signed excuse should be brought to me as soon as possible.

Hall Privileges
You will have adequate time to take care of business between classes. I will allow you to make restroom trips as you feel necessary UNTIL it becomes an abuse. I reserve the right to take away restroom privileges. If you have a medical condition that requires you to need to go to the bathroom frequently please bring me a medical excuse so that I can be aware of it.
School Wide Rules
School wide rules are strictly enforced. Violators will receive a warning as a first offense, a call home will be the second offense, and a parent/teacher conference request would be the third offense. At this point, if you are not making an effort to correct the inappropriate behavior, a disciplinary referral will be issued.
Cheating Policy
Anyone who participates in cheating on a test, project or other assignments will receive a zero for that grade. No Excuses!  Talk to me before you get caught.
Class Rules
Be prepared to apply yourself
Be respectful of yourself and others
Be responsible for what you say and do
Be diligent with your time
Be safe for your sake and others
Be neat and don’t eat, chew gum, or groom in class
Daily Arrival Procedures
I expect you to abide by the following procedures without me having to call your attention before I make my way to the front of the room:
-          Come in to the classroom. If the door is unlocked and I am not inside, please make a line outside the door and wait until I arrive.
-          This prevents accidents from occurring inside the room while it is unsupervised.
-          Turn in any homework to the indicated folder. Make sure it has your name on it. No name papers will be hung up for a week and then thrown if not claimed.
-          Have a pencil to write with. Not having a pencil is no excuse to not be ready for class. If you need a pencil, come to my table, ask, and borrow one. Do this BEFORE I start class.
-          Take a seat.
-          Begin the daily do now on your dry erase board
-          As I make my way to the front of the classroom, please stop talking and give me your undivided attention.
When We Have a Visitor:
When someone enters our classroom that is not a part of our class, I expect you to be on your best behavior. Only speak if the visitor is speaking directly to you, otherwise continue working until I am able to resume our lesson. If the speaker requires me to step out of the classroom, I expect zero noise/movement while I am out.
Class Goals:
Turn in every assignment on time
Keep the absences to an absolute minimum
100% Passing STAAR/ 50% Level III

Students used post it notes to show what a great classmate "Is", "Says", "Does", and "Is Not." It was a great way to open a discussion and to talk about the importance of doing your part in the classroom.
